White Paper Full Text - "The Future Of VPN For SMBs"

The market for Internet-based virtual private network (VPN) services that reduce the cost and complexity of remote access for small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) is poised for explosive growth in the next two years, according to a white paper by research and consulting firm Access Markets International (AMI) Partners (www.ami-partners.com).

The white paper, written by Dr. Alex Kalamarides, senior vice president, Research & Consulting Services at AMI-Partners, predicts that nearly one in five of the 7.6 million SMBs in the United States will have high-speed Internet access and a local area network in 2001. This, said Dr. Kalamarides, makes them prime candidates for VPN services, which provide remote-access capabilities, such as those offered by Netilla(sm) Networks, Inc. (www.netilla.com), one of the companies featured in the paper. "

Such services can bring the advantages of VPNs - revenue increases, lower costs, increased productivity and improved responsiveness to customers - to SMBs, which previously could not afford VPNs and typically lack the technical resources to install and operate them", says Dr. Kalamarides. "Given such benefits and the growing number of SMBs using low-cost, high-speed Internet access and operating local area networks, AMI-Partners sees a potential for growth well beyond the $2.2-billion SMB market currently forecast for VPNs in 2001."

"The optimal way for companies to reach the diverse SMB market is through SMB-focused channel participants, such as network and systems integrators and ISPs," added Dr. Kalamarides. "They will provide the reach, influence and value-adds, such as customer care and 24/7 onsite support, needed for success in this market."

"This white paper spells out the opportunity for us in a very compelling way," said Netilla Networks' CEO Reginald (Reggie) Best. "It clearly shows that the benefits of secure remote access to office networks - previously limited to large companies with significant IT resources - are now available to SMBs. The paper also validates our choice of an indirect sales channel using Netilla-certified systems integrators, value-added resellers and other solution providers to reach the marketplace."

In addition to Netilla Networks, which commissioned the white paper, AMI-Partners looked at alternative suppliers such as Citrix, eTunnels and OpenReach.

The complete white paper can be read online or downloadable from the AMI-Partners Web site, at www.ami-partners.com/wpapers.asp.
